Building a bridge that connects the community and strengthens the family

Below is a list of activities the Houston Youth Ranch sponsors. Please take a look at our calendar to see what's next on the horizon.
While the HYR is undergoing transformation with its major renovation project, activities have been suspended out of safety concerns for participants. The ranch will resume normal operations in 2015.

The Houston Youth Ranch offers numerous activities throughout the year to provide educational opportunities for local youth and youth organizations. These activities are structured to provide evidence-based practices to assist youth in developing interpersonal and socialization skills, confidence, discipline, recreation, and family strengthening. Annual events include:

  • February: Black History Program- provides opportunities for youth to learn about their heritage, sacrifices of many before them, understand the struggles of their ancestors and celebrate the accomplishments of an African American.

  • March: Law Enforcement and Firefighters Youth Day - Allows youth to meet and interact with law enforcement executives from Federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies while participating in recreational activities. This interaction establishes mentoring relationships between the participants. This event also fosters a bond, trust, and understanding between youth and law enforcement.

  • March: Black Heritage Day Festival – Celebrated in conjunction with the Houston Livestock show and Rodeo; commemorating Black heritage through exhibits and events.

  • May: Nature Heritage Society Fishing Camp – Camping, fishing, archery, outdoor cooking, nature seminars, plant life classes and exhibits and etc.
